A Tribute to Brother Ravi Batra ji
A story written by him, shared by Jyoti didi and Nandita didi (GP members)
I met Baba for the first time on 16 August 1964 in the city of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. At around 6 p.m., I entered his room. At that time, my mind was filled with doubts, but when I came out of the room, I found myself filled with an extraordinary joy and spiritual exhilaration. Baba advised me to build myself through rigorous and prolonged spiritual practice so that I could serve humanity. I began intensive spiritual practice. However, this created several unexpected problems for me. Therefore, two months later, I went to Jaipur to meet him, where I again had the good fortune of having his darshan.

At that time, I was a student at the Delhi School of Economics, and India was one of the poorest countries in the world. As soon as I entered Baba’s room, I forgot all my problems and once again became immersed in a state of bliss. When I opened my eyes, Baba began speaking to me, and I focused my attention on what he was saying.
Baba asked me, “Ravi”—he sometimes called me by this name—“What have you been doing for the past two months?”
I replied, “Baba, I have been meditating for about three to four hours every day, but I am facing many difficulties. I have developed severe headaches and stomach pains. Almost everyone is angry with me. My parents are shocked; even my friends think that I have gone mad. I cannot understand any of this, especially when I am trying to help everyone.”
Baba smiled, as though my experience was nothing unusual to him. He said, “The path of spiritual practice is full of thorns, but I will give you some advice. You should surrender your body, mind, and soul to the Supreme Entity. Then He will make you perform those actions that will be beneficial to you and to society. Now tell me, what do you want to do for humanity?”
I replied, “Baba, I want to eradicate poverty from India.”
Suddenly, Baba’s expression changed. He appeared disappointed, even somewhat angry. I could not understand what I had done wrong. In a serious voice, he said, “Ravi, you are thinking too narrowly. The goal of your life should be to eradicate poverty from the entire world. This is the responsibility I am giving you. India is not the only poor country; poverty is even worse in some other parts of the world.”
I can at least say that I was stunned. At that time, I was merely a student and had neither a reputation nor any qualifications as an economist. I said, “Sir, how can I possibly fulfill the responsibility you have given me when I have not even completed my master’s degree?”
Baba replied, “The One who gives you the work also provides you with the means to accomplish it. I will remain with you throughout your life, even when you go abroad.”
At this, I interrupted him and asked, “Did you say ‘abroad,’ Baba? As long as you are here, I do not want to leave India. I cannot even imagine having to go away from you.”
Baba then said, “No, Ravi, you will have to go abroad, and in fact, you will go abroad to fulfill the responsibility I have given you.”

Two years later, I went to the United States to pursue a Ph.D. in economics, although at that time I had no particular interest in doing so. Delhi had become extremely unpleasant for me, and I simply wanted to leave the city and go somewhere else. I received a scholarship from Southern Illinois University and went to America.
Years passed. I wrote many books on Baba’s principles and philosophy, but they were severely criticized. Despite my best efforts, I could not convince economists that reducing the concentration of wealth was necessary to eliminate poverty.
In fact, I became so dedicated to finding a concrete plan for eliminating poverty that I worked on the problem for about ten hours a day, seven days a week. Eventually, my health gave way, and in 2013 I was diagnosed with leukemia. My doctors—in fact, a team of three doctors—told me that my type of cancer was extremely serious and that there appeared to be no immediate cure. I was told that I had about six months to live, although regular blood transfusions could extend my life to approximately two years.
I was somewhat shaken, but I was more concerned about my family than about myself. I asked the doctors whether they could arrange blood for me from a vegetarian person. Hearing this, they all burst out laughing.
One morning in July 2013, I woke up with my heart beating extremely fast. I became convinced that my final moment had arrived. So I began meditating on Baba’s image in Varabhaya Mudra. I chanted my Guru Mantra and said to Baba:
“It seems that I will soon be coming to you. How wonderful it will be to be with you! My only regret is that I could not fulfill the responsibility you gave me. Perhaps I should receive blood transfusions, extend my life for some more time, write another book, and make one final attempt to find a way to eliminate global poverty. Baba, what do you say?”
Immediately, I heard a voice:
“Tatha-astu. Let it be so. Go and get a blood transfusion immediately. And do not worry about any medicine; I have already arranged for it. You will find it in Washington, D.C.”
In short, I received a blood transfusion that very day. It gave me so much energy that I was able to travel to Washington, D.C. There, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) enrolled me in a clinical trial for a new medicine. They were particularly interested in my case because I had the most severe form of leukemia and was also over 65 years old.
Fifteen days later, all the symptoms of my cancer had disappeared. I no longer experienced dizziness, constant fatigue, or difficulty breathing. I could climb stairs without any difficulty.
Dr. Farooqui of the NIH told me, “There are 75 patients in this clinical trial, and apart from a 35-year-old young man, your recovery has been the fastest. It seems as though this medicine was made for you. What is your secret?”
They were surprised by my answer. I said:

“I am a yogi, and my secret is my Guru. I also practice some other spiritual disciplines that he taught me. These include asanas (yogic exercises), therapeutic dancing (Kaoshikii), sunbathing, a special type of therapeutic pranayama, and a special oil prepared at home that helps me control my pain. Above all, I meditate extensively and chant a therapeutic mantra that helps me control my anxiety.”
The doctor found these statements meaningless and unscientific. He said that the results I had achieved through everything I had done were nothing short of a miracle. He allowed me to return home but instructed me to come back every month for regular checkups.
Following the doctors’ advice, although I was very disappointed, I stopped playing tennis. But in September, I returned to the tennis court. My friends warmly welcomed me. They had greatly missed their regular playing partner.
Although all the symptoms of cancer had disappeared, I continued to visit the NIH every month, undergo blood tests and other medical examinations, receive my medication, and then return to Dallas. My health continued to improve steadily.
The greatest change occurred in my hemoglobin level. At one point, my hemoglobin had fallen to 5, which was so low that it could have caused a stroke or heart attack—but neither occurred. My hemoglobin is now above 14, which is even higher than my doctor’s hemoglobin level.
In April 2014, while sitting in a hotel room in Washington, D.C., I reflected on the events of the previous year—how, through Baba’s grace and assistance, I had been saved from certain death.
I closed my eyes and meditated on Baba’s form. About an hour later, various chapters of another book began to emerge in my inner vision. Several practical solutions for eliminating poverty suddenly flashed into my mind.
Suddenly, I felt that the responsibility Baba had entrusted to me many years earlier was now within my reach.
The idea that was born in that Washington, D.C., hotel eventually became my new book—End Unemployment Now: How to Eliminate Joblessness, Debt and Poverty Despite Congress.

के उस होटल में जन्मे उसी विचार का परिणाम मेरी नई पुस्तक बनी— End Unemployment Now: How to Eliminate Joblessness, Debt and Poverty Despite Congress (बेरोजगारी अभी समाप्त करें: कांग्रेस के बावजूद बेरोजगारी, ऋण और गरीबी को कैसे समाप्त किया जाए)।
